#the only thing i’m grateful for is that we still live in a country where we call a fascist a fascist #and not alt-right or some other BS #at least for now #just this christmas my grandfather was telling us a story of how when he was young #his uncle took him aside and told him to burn three suitcases full of brand new expensive books #because they were afraid #and of course this is nothing at all to many of the things that were done #but the fact that this event still has that strong an impact on my 80 year old grandfather really says something #they were poor those books were a rare commodity #he said he cried while he did it #the point being that people here still remember fascism #everyone has stories #many far more horrifying than this simple book burning #fascism isn’t some fictional thing that only exists in hollywood
Please be aware that the presence of fascism in Portugal left such a scar our constitution (signed in 1976 after the revolution) states it is completely illegal to have right-wing extremist political parties. At the moment, there is one party that is far-right, neo-nazi and the only reason they exist legally is because they literally bought another existing party that had gone bankrupt that is center-right.
Also, I am not sure we’re progressive enough to label fascism as fascism. I don’t want to be the pessimistic bitch, but unfortunately, that is happening less and less. No, we don’t have the denomination ‘alt-right’ because we speak Portuguese, but we have other expressions. Every time someone starts a sentence with ‘at least’ and proceeds to excuse a nearly 50 year long fascist regime, you’re entering that grey area.
There are more and more extremist groups rising, and they all look like those friendly fellas aiding abandoned dogs. Your friend who is so socially woke posting pictures of IRA (not the irish IRA) saying they’re being defamed because they save dogs, she’s falling victim to an age-old technique. These people can’t identify themselves with nazism anymore because nazism has an aesthetic, and that aesthetic is negative. Like the twitter thread says, these people are ‘focused’ on social issues, they wanna solve poverty, they wanna eradicate homelessness, they wanna help animals. Remember André Ventura? The guy who literally used Trump’s campaign slogan to run for Loures? He made two proposals: chemically castrate pedophiles and ban gay marriage.
Do you think people made the distinction? Do you think those proposals were made at the same time by accident? Do you think this guy isn’t perfectly aware that one of the worst stereotypes that has harmed gay men throughout history is to be labelled pedophiles?
These people put their foot inside the circle with something you want to hear, and that snatch that away from you the moment they grasp power.
Remember when Salazar ‘filled the State’s safes with gold’? And yet 80% of the population was illiterate and living below poverty line?
Don’t believe a single thing these people say. However comforting it might sound to your ears, it has a greater agenda that is far, far worse.
